Overlord Volume 2 Afterword

Afterword

Greetings, dear readers, it’s been a while. This is Maruyama Kugane.

I have a small tale to tell from when I was redoing the battle scenes. When I was acting out the movements in real life, I accidentally knocked over a cup full of cafe au lait with my left hand.  I almost cried when the coffee-colored liquid sprayed everywhere. Though my bed was slightly stained, it was not a large patch, and the manuscript was unharmed, so I guess it was not that bad. If any of you readers are interested, you can try looking for the scene where I spilled my cafe au lait.

It is the scene which smells of milk.

Amidst all of these trials and tribulations was born Overlord 2: Warrior of Darkness. I would be glad if you enjoyed it.

I trust you can recommend this story to those people who are tired of the cliche of saving the damsel in distress. Since men and women are equal, then saving a male character should be fine, right? Although the protagonist always thinks of his own gain in everything he does, it would please me if you enjoyed a character like him who is motivated by self-interest.

Then, I will express my thanks next.

First, thank you to So-bin-sama, who drew the beautiful illustration for this book as well. The final product was more exciting than I imagined, and thanks to the art, I redid some of the battle scenes.

Thank you to Chord Design Studio, who once again helped me to produce an exquisite book cover and binding. I’m also very grateful to Ohaku-sama, who helped proofread some of the more difficult parts to understand. Thank you for this time as well, Editor F-Da-sama, I know I’ve caused a lot of trouble for you. Please add a little more red for me! No, I know it’s better not to have it...

Also, to my university friend Honey — thanks for this time too.

And last but not least, to the gentle readers who bought this book, as well as the online friends who gave their feedback while the webnovel was still running, thank you very much. Your remarks have always been a source of motivation for me.

Then, the next volume… it should be easier than this one… do I have to read it again? I don’t really want to...

No, as an author, I can do it for the sake of producing an interesting work… oh, that’s enough of my mumbling. It’s about time I bade you all farewell.

I will continue working hard, and I hope to see you again in the third volume.

See you again.

    1. i thought of hamsuke as a tiger (king of the forest) then wen ainz mentioned he was a hamster the image in my head fused a hamster with a tiger lol. this is why we need manga and anime :P

    2. their is a manga of this... but i wouldn't recommend it. it doesn't grab the dark theme of this light novel and it feels rushed, light novel is a 1000 times better

    3. cyrusstoke11, total agreement on the manga

    4. The manga is a lot less dark. I'm reading both, as the light novel explains a lot better.

    5. Since Ainz mentioned Nue I had the image of a Nue with a hamster head in my mind.

    6. The anime looks nice though it's at episode six atm and is following the novel quite nicely as far as I can tell.

    7. I've watched the anime of this and read the manga. I just found out that MP uses Despair V (lowered to I) to Hamsuke. Woah. LN is much better for me.

  10. Hamuke's appearance is so disappointing LOL. Despite Ainz's thoughts I still thought he'd look somewhat cool. And look at that! Cocytus has a positive sense of justice. I can't wait to read more about him.

    1. To him, Ainz's Will is justice.

    2. I think the sense of justice stat might be a bit too abstract. I don't think it always applies. Take a look at Ainz's stats. He has -500 sense of justice. You'd think that would make him OMFG EVIL TERRIBLE INJUSTICE right? However that's not the case at all. He's by no means "good", but he's not evil either. All of his actions are very pragmatic and uninfluenced by emotion. He does what's best for his own people, and takes care of his own. He praises them and treats them kindly, and but is ruthless to his enemies. If sense of justice was a stat that measured how altruistic the character was, I would say Ainz is closer to a 0 than -500.

I can't say for sure if that works out for the other characters though. Narbel seems amicable enough hahahaha, but her disdain for humans is clear and real. However she doesn't appear to be unnecessarily cruel. Most of her actions are reigned in by Ainz though so who knows, maybe she and Albedo would happily go on killing sprees. But based on what I've seen so far they would probably just treat humans the same as bugs. Most of the time bugs are beneath their notice, but if one crosses their path they'd probably casually brush them away (kill them quickly lol).

    3. Yeah the sense of justice is weird. Maybe it's more a measure of how much they're willing to help others out of a sense of justice. Those in the high negatives obviously don't give a shit about others outside of Nazarick unless there's some benefit for themselves.

    4. Maybe sense of justice ties on PVP system on their old game,'Yggdrasil'. Which in my speculation the lower your sense of justice the more times you pk a player ? It like criminal system on other MMO.

    5. I believe the Sense of Justice Stats is greatly influnced by the class and Job you choose. Afterall it seemed that some races were allowed to be hunted. Ainz told this to that he was many times killed and that they created there Guild as Counterplace for Hemimorps hunting.

  11. As Bat Cow, I empathize with Hamsuke's plight.
The poor fellow just wants to be loved. To find another member of his species.
But just like the Bat Cow, he is from a rare species and may never find true requited love.

  13. As for that small little piece of paper wrapped around the book at the bottom whenever you buy a book (with advertisements and news announcements), it has been referred to as an "obi".

    1. The sash taht you wrap kimonos with? Japanese people and their weird products and names.

      Delete
    2. "Obi" means just "belt" and "sash". Since that thing looks a bit like putting a belt on a book, then they call it "obi". I'm not really sure how it's called in English (in the West they only use it to sometimes mark special editions, tell of a prize won by the book or promote an author, while in Japan it's included more often), but WordReference has it as "[book] band".

  15. That Hamsuke is just perfect. Seeing that hilarious opinion makes Ainz's facepalm reaction that much more realistic hahahahahaha.

  19. Did anyone notice the cocytus is a nilfheim knight so close to alfheim XD

i sense a connection between then... XD

    1. Nilfheim and alfheim are worlds in nordic mythology. Kinda like hell and heaven in christian mythology, but norse have 9 of them, including the human world. Ygddrasil the game is supposed to use a lot of norse mythology (that causes Ains to wonder why there are christian-themed monsters like angels)
