Overlord Volume 7 Afterword

Seven months have passed since Volume 6 was published. Long time no see, I am Maruyama.

By the time this volume is published, it will be the end of August, when summer is at its peak. When Maruyama was young, I felt the heat receding when September came along, but that isn’t so right now, it still feels hot even in mid-September. Those are just my memories from when I was young, it would be strange if nothing had changed at all.

Thanks to the extra layer of clothing Maruyama wears compared to normal people, known as fat,, I once again affirm that I hate summer. I spend most of my time in an air-conditioned room in order to cool the computers down, but I still sweat a lot when I travel to my company. The smell of my swear overwhelms my cologne; this is terrible.

That’s how hot it is. Will the people who see the obi on the book shout “Fuwah!” in amazement? They might think, this must be an illusion caused by the heat of the summer or something.

However, this is the truth!

Even Maruyama shrieked “Are you for real!” as the project progressed.

Overlord is getting an anime!!

I will work hard in order to produce good work; please look forward to it!

Now then, I will endure my stomach pain as I express my gratitude.

This time round, it is an honor for the history of lightnovels to have So-bin-sama provide his unbelievable book illustrations. You really did your best. That’s how Maruyama feels, and I’m sure the readers are grateful too! Let’s eat out together next time! To Chord Design Studio-sama, thank you very much for doing the design as always. To the proofreader Ohaku-sama, thank you for your pointers as always.

Also, thanks to the editor, F-da-sama, who firmly corrected the half-hearted Maruyama and recommended Kyouhoku for the illustrations without hesitation. Please don’t push yourself and work in moderation.

Thank you very much, everyone who assisted in the production of Overlord. In addition, thank you for everything you’ve done, Honey.

And finally, thank you dear readers for purchasing my book!

    3. You guys haven't read the chapter or what?

The elf archer and the dual welding fighter went to be living nest...

The cleric went to demiurge for theological experiments.

Entoma got a new voice and Ainz was concerned about the fate of that body.

Whose parts exactly do you think were shared around?

    4. In the Webnovel arche survived as a lustslave for shalltear. But here she is dead. Poor little sister i feel really sorry for them. I really think ainz acted too alien with his decision too kill all the workers and why does he torture those people basicly without reason. His protection for the legacy of his guild is completly overexxagerated by the author. What is more important. The suffering of people or your internetgame guild? From this viewpoint the way acts destroys alittle bit my suspension of disbelief...

    5. ammmmmm it could be one of the invaders like the ones that died outside

    6. I dont really understand Seth255......could you be more specific? I've read the chapter and in the case of Entoma voices,i really thought that she's just using the spare bug in her disposal (as revealed in this volume prologue i think)....

      So care to elaborate?

    7. If you were to notice carefully, after Entoma's other voice got destroyed in the fight, the translations were a bit messed up when she is speaking.
Using the form of capitalisation in the translations, it shows that Entoma's original voice is imperfect.
At this chapter, we see that Entoma is once again speaking in a clear manner. It implies a lot on that she has a new voice.
Where could she have gotten it? It's easy, if you were to break it down; one of the invaders. Because Albedo has mentioned "rude little girl". Now, if the 'rude' refers to Entoma, what would have happened? Albedo would have scolded her straight, with killing intent.
Finally, who's voice could it be? Arche's. That is because her body is the only intact one

      Delete
    8. It could have been Imina. The term Hunter was used. Albedo could be talking about how Imina was rude in that she talked to Ainz as an equal.

    9. Super happy for the translating, but seriously what was up with this chapter. Ainz butchering goodhearted people is not really in my taste. Poor Arche... I had hopes for her.

    10. oh boy i feel bad for myself thinking like this stuff and saying it, arche did puked at the sight of ainz power so albedo might? referring at that?

    11. arche is dead, entoma use her voice now, and her body was cut in pieces and send to different parts. I hope someone actually kills ainz in the future.

    12. Iirc there was a rude female in the ground team. Could be from there...

    13. @Adeeqa Felani

Swift death is the only mercy he give to thieves.

The Archer, the Fighter and the Cleric of Foresight are alive.

The archer and fighter, that Ainz simply paralyzed/controlled are turned into "nest" for monsters.
The Cleric is needed for experimenting.

In fact it's fairly possible that most of the workers are taken alive.

Entoma "maid form" is a disguise made from people (re-read the fight between Entoma and Evileye), she uses bugs as tools but she takes parts from real people that the bugs wear/uses. Ever saw the first Men In Black? The bad guy is essentially Entoma.

Ainz express concern after hearing Entoma new voice and want to know what happened to the body. Albedo snaps and call it rude to have taken that voice.

Ainz then consider that having put the body to use, it's some sort of a good thing, at least the the death of that person wasn't totally wasted.

That can only be Arche which was killed by Shalltear swiftly out of respect for Foresight teamwork. So Ainz is concerned. It's also Arche that vomited when she realized what Ainz what and caused Albedo to snap (the archer girl actually put Albedo in her place saying that there was a great being on the surface. So she sort of respected Ainz even without knowing. It's possible but it wouldn't really make sense).

The end of the paragraph also mean that the other guys that are already horribly tortured by behind living host to monsters larvae, regularly skinned for parchments, etc...

Are probably gonna get their members cut off/parts harvested in plus of their usual treatment as to not "waste" anything.

Frankly I thought that by the Lizardmen arc most people had understood that NOPE Ainz Ooal Gown aren't the good guys.

They EXTERMINATED A RACE OF INTELLIGENT CREATURES TO MAKE BETTER UNDEAD SOLDIERS.

      Ok.

It doesn't get more evil than that. Rape, torture, mutilations... doesn't hold a candle to planned mass murder.

Sure Cocytus liked the lizard so instead of exterminating they are FARMING THEM.

Like cattle. Mass slavery and blood sacrifices instead of mass murder.

      Yeah. Not. Evil. At. All.

I haven't read ahead. But I'm fairly sure one of the countries are gonna get subjugated HARD. If not all.

It's likely that Ainz is gonna put the Evil princess as his minion in the Kingdom and the sorcerer that already seriously dabble into necromancy has his other minion in the Empire.

Probably will happen after killing all the "good" characters too.

      Delete
    16. @Seth 2255 : Yeah, i agree with your view. But, let me add something from my own perspective.

From what i see, Ainz is both good and bad. Actually he's rather on good side, if there isn't any reason to kill people then he won't kill them. Well, although killing people when they know Nazarick is quite a bit S, but that only is. Never more or less.

And hence, one most important point. Ainz takes Nazarick above everything else. As long as the decision/idea benefits Nazarick, he'll take that literally although he doesn't wish to do it (like killing people needlessly or "farming the lizardmen")

The bad news : Ainz is easily influenced, especially by the guardians. And we know that almost all of the guardians have a bad nature towards non-heteromorphic race and non-Nazarick party. That's why Ainz took such actions to the Lizardmen etc.

Long to short, Ainz who take Nazarick above everything else is actually a good person who doesn't want to be known as ruthless (in the earlier volume, that's Ainz hoped) - but the guardians majority are quite bad and Ainz is easily influenced by them. Hence the decision he made lately are rather ruthless (well, with the lizardmen case, i don't personally think that was ruthless - rather quite soft and forgiving)

    18. I believe Momonga is Chaotic Neutral that is a bit inclined to being Neutral Evil. As a king, what's most important to him is his subjects, and he is aware that being compassionate with humans too much will only bring trouble.

    19. Typically put, this novel is pretty much into gore and other for mature content. Although it's pretty good, it's similar to many with tragic genres. I pity Arche and the rest of her team, but be that as it may, they are necessary sacrifices to move the story forward. If any of you dislike this genre, then simply don't read at all. I find it pointless to read a novel simply to complain about it or mock it. Only fools would mock others faults for they cannot stand their own. For that reason, I mainly only edit chapters I can deal with. Well, I was mainly here for Knights and Magic so although I help out a bit for Overlord, I really can't deal with editing it as it's bad for my heart. Although I'm fine with just reading.

      Delete
    20. I only edit chapters I'm ok with. Look at Krytyk, he had trouble editing Elven Blood due to it's gore and tragedy while he worked fast when he had time for OSO.

Considering much stronger and many many more ppl tried before and failed horribly, Dont get me wrong i still enjoyed the read but after seeing everyone die pointlessly and hardly put to good use except for food... it just doesnt make sense to me. I am sure with ainz knowledge/skills and allies, he could make fine warriors and turn some into 6th tier magicians or higher which make fine good meat shields when taking over the world. I thought after the whole shalltear incident he would be trying to get more allies more meat shields to protect his family. I mean fine kill the weaker one's an the disrespectfull one's but someone needs to spread the word of ainz. Especially now that he has openly revealed himself so quickly after i just dont get it!!

That was back when Ainz Ooal Gown was at the height of its strength as a guild, with all members present, and it would have been easy to farm XP and gold to replace any they expend.
As mentioned at least twice in the volume, this "test" was specifically set with the parameters of minimizing the use of expensive traps/summons.

On keeping them as subjects: As far as Ainz is concerned, they've already proven themselves as dishonourable (in it for the money) and untrustworthy (trying to bluff him about knowing anything about his allies).
And why would he waste time raising untrustworthy subjects (who might immediately turn on him if given half a chance), when he could summon far stronger creatures if it ever came down to it?

    25. i think they are also thinking of opening the tomb to general audiences
luring adventurers in just to use them as fodder
thus they need to test the defense mechanism first

    26. "I mean allll this to test the defense? WTF does that rly need to be tested at this point?"

Seriously can you guys even read? I'm starting to have serious doubts about the efficiency of the developed world system.

      The goal was to
      1) Test the defenses, to actually measure the amount of consumables Nazarick needs.
While this wasn't a problem in the game it's a big one now. In case of a war (and they're gunning for world domination so there's gonna be a war) the fact is that there are guys that can fight on par with the Pleiades (Evileye) if not the Guardians (the dragon from the interlude and his "old friend" seem pretty powerful... and they have a guild weapon.)
They also mention the "Insect demon god" and "wild magic" (I think the "young one crybaby" they mention is actually Evileye but I might be wrong). Most magic are based on the ones from the game BUT Evileye defeat Entoma because she can use "insecticide magic" which is NOT from the game and against which Entoma was virtually powerless. Because obviously magic protection from the game doesn't work against magic not from the game. That's a pretty big threat even for guys level 100 because those spells literally bypass all their resistances.

      Then the tomb.
Sure the tomb was undefeated in the game. But the game had rules that likely forbid actually massive and prolonged assaults (they are described as custom raid instances).

And the defenses consumes gold same as the resurrection of NPCs (IIRC it's a lot more than it was, I might be wrong but to rez Shalltear they brought A LOT), when they're not consuming XP of whoever's activating it/guild members (it's unclear). Player Rez and complicated spells eat XP too.
Gold they might be able to manage to procure, but XP is likely impossible. Meaning everytime they will use those... they will get weaker.

If you take on the world, well the world is big. Their enemies have virtually unlimited resources. Meaning this could turn into a war of attrition.
One Nazarick will lose if they don't manage their resources properly.

So yeah testing the defense against a real enough threat is necessary to calculate resources depletion rates and logistical issues. Tactic is the art of winning battles, strategy is the art of winning wars. Logistics is the biggest part of strategy.

    27. 2) The whole thing is charade orchestrated to have the empire recognized that Nazarick is an actual independent country.

Ainz send the workers against himself but it's the Emperor that actually gave the order. Meaning that Ainz can have the Emperor accountable for home invasion and put him in a position of weakness. He can even use the fact he sent workers (that are considered barely above outlaws) instead of going through the proper channels of the adventurers guilds to shame him even further (it's fine for those in power to act besides the law... as long as they don't get caught).

They're also going with the lie of "Ainz Ooal Gown the great magic caster", sending the dark elves and a dragon (both of which are existences known and tolerated in that world. Unlike the undead and various monsters of Nazarick).

Meaning that for the world the Emperor attacked Ainz.

For the immediate neighbors (the Kingdom) Ainz is a reclusive powerful magician but a good guy (saved Gazef and the villagers), meaning if he level the Empire capital city they will likely say he had a just cause to attack them, arguing that if the Empire had attacked a great dragon lair or something it's only natural they get retaliation in kind, preventing any "world level" retaliation.

Add the fact that the neighbors (Kingdom, Theocracy) don't like the Empire in the first place and that make the Empire in quite a bad position.

So it's a classic case of two bird one stone.

They test the defenses AND they get established as a country (at least it's quite possible they're gonna go for "Nazarick is independent" then trick the Kingdom into a war against Nazarick since in it's geographical territory, then have the Empire attack the Kingdom as Nazarick allies then Nazarick and the Empire are gonna carve up the Kingdom).

Three birds if you count in the interior situation of Nazarick (restless servants wanting enemies/food).

      Delete
    28. no i get what you are saying but the ppl they tested them on were waaaaaaaayyyyy to weak i feel the lizardmen could of done just as good if not better. If you truly wish to test the def then get stronger ppl. Also to trigger traps and see how much resources they consume could of easily been done by the unlimited dead they have at there disposal. And again they should of used stronger ppl or the entire thing is a waste.

An you cant just be saying 2 birds 3 birds when there are much better options at hand. An if they need food, go to slave traders or the evil organizations that are everywhere. When you are a being far more powerful than anyone you encounter you can stop the "ants" and "bugs" without killing them to feed the nazarick family. But in previous chapters that wasnt taken into consideration so food obviously isnt needed as much as you would lik to believe for the undead.

All i am saying is there were a few good gems that could of been polished an become much stronger to serve nazarick to protect his guardians, than to be food that isnt needed for undead. I mean he even resurrected the older lizardmen warriors, he said he wasnt untl he found a use for them well hes alive so obviously he found a use for him (forgot his name).

Once again most of what you say could of easily been done while keeping the stronger one's alive so im confused who is not reading what now? My entire point was keep the gems make them strong to use as meat shields but to kill them all made no sense when there are other options i mean shit he already sent a dragon and emissaries so he is obviously going to use strenth to establish his country i still dont see a single point that makes sense to kill everyone who invaded instead of using them like the lizardmen.

      Delete
    29. Anonymous some of them proved to be loyal to there comrades which means if they get more comrades they would be loyal to them as well. An most of those adventures ya were there for money but money to feed family my dude. Do you love doing ur job? i sure dont but i need to have one to feed my family and considering this is a world created for adventuring to kill them for it doesnt make sense. Some just love the idea of finding new places and FOR THE RECORD they didnt think anyone "alive" lived there so they were there to feed there family's by killing weak undead well they were wrong. The fact is for someone who cant show emotion for more than a sec he sure does take things personal and is blinded by it. He doesnt have to waste his time on them just like lizardmen he isnt wasting anymore time on them either but there still alive and training as well as training other members of nazarick. An once again its obvious in this that strength brings in loyality. Some if not all the stronger one's with potential would of been loyal. An he is still using outsiders who can betray him telling them all his secrets? obviously he doesnt care at this point anymore. So once again i dont see a singe point that makes sense to kill everyone.

      Delete
    30. also one more thing before i go to work ugh. I feel the lizardmen could of used the experience to fight human warriors and mages so keeping the strongest party/strongest ppl alive could of been good use for nazarick experience. The options are endless but once there dead and torn apart and eaten they are of no use. The only reason ainz did this was because of that evil fucker Demiurge i believe proposed it and evil ainz said he couldnt find a reason to not accept his proposal or something like that. anyway fack gotta run

      Delete
    31. Soo much wrong with that comment.
They might've been loyal to one another, but that was because they went on for years like that and it was coincidence. They themselves said it.

Also they found out that the thing has something living in there. They say it all of the time, because it is clean etc.

The lizardmen 1. got another mentallity. For the lizardmen it is just normal to serve the stronger ones. That doesn't go for humans. 2. They did not attack nazarick, but were attacked by nazarick (also he tested stuff on them as well). 3. He wanted to kill them all of. They are only alive because cocyotus asked for it.

Next point is, they are not all killed. Many of them are probably still alive and experiments or other things are done with them. Also he still got a bunch of captured humans from the theocracy and he can get himselfs some humans whenever he wants.

Also the people he tested were on the level of a mithril adventurer. From what I heard, a mithril adventurer is as strong as like 50 soldiers, if not stronger. Thus these guys are already strong enough to invade a city if all of them go.

He rescurrected the lizardmen because of various things. 1. Cocyotus asked for it. 2. He could show of his power and thus gain the loyality of the lizardmen even more.
One of the reasons why the lizardmen are accepted in the first place, is because they are not humans. Nearly every nazarick guard hates humans, that doesn't apply to the other races. The others are only inferior, but the humanlike ones are like parasites to them.

      Delete
    32. I don't think that's necessarily the case.

The NPCs of Nazarick look down on humans as inferior life forms. It's only people like Entoma, Demiurge, etc. who enjoy eating / torturing / etc. humans.

Keep in mind, that them looking down on humans is more of a steoreotype. All it takes is a bunch of people like Fluder coming onboard to show that humans *can* be as useful as them (except, for the Guardians, but they're superior in strength to everyone in Nazarick).

      Delete
    33. well Ainz Ooal Gown have a rule before joining you have to be a heteromorphic race, so that been said it's clearly why ainz didn't even want those workers to be his servants. he only consider humans with rare innate talent like nfirea, fluder and with his personal debt with tsuare the rest of human race are inferior life forms for them with no use so if you understand that it's so easy why this chapter is necessary to achieve their goal "World Domination" there's a lot of reasons in the past chapters to back this up.

      Delete
    34. " Ainz Ooal Gown have a rule before joining you have to be a heteromorphic race "
Ainz is the worst kind of hypocrite because hes really not an undead mage but a human pretending to be a undead mage in a game. Think of it like Dave Chappelle The Black White Supremacist skid. Atleast Clayton Bigsby the character that Dave play didn't know he was really black unlike Ainz.

      Delete
    35. Ahm what?It was a guild in a game, started becasue people killed heteromorphic players. It's just a guild theme.

      Delete
    36. Maddinhpws just because something lives there doesnt mean its "living" they said it was prob a golem from what i can remember and most agreed no person was living there an it was prob a tomb from 200+years ago.

mithril adventurer is strong for the basic human but even ainz has said he is worried someone even stronger than him might have stayed behind. My point is an im tired of repeating myself mithril adventurer is nowhere near as powerful as when nazarick was invaded in the past by other players. However a select few of those mithril adventurer could easily become much stronger an more useful to nazarick just like the lizardmen.

I am not saying keep them all an u ppl need to understand this if you are going to respond because the ignorance is amazing. He is already telling other humans who are not apart of nazarick so a couple more wouldnt hurt especially under supervision.

An it is extremely easy for someone as powerful as ainz to earn loyalty from humans he has done it before even the most powerful warrior respects him =) an now what will happen if somehow the ppl find out he was behind it? they prob wont but it is possible then EVERYTHING he has worked for is gone. But one easy example would be to save Arche's sisters or keep them on house arrest in nazarick than bam you have the loyalty of every member of Foresight. An once again as you have put it they are as strong as 50 soldiers well guess what? with nazarick help they could be stronger and be the leading forces to take over the world under Ainz, instead of using his family would could die in battle or be mind controlled.

      Delete
    37. But then again i didnt rly get what exactly happen to everyone. But from what i could understand they are no longer themselves or no longer alive/human. Which to me once someone hast taken/damaged the soul they can no longer get stronger under there own an can only get stronger through other means like zombie/undead....but BUT you can only get so strong that way and no more room for improvement. idk i guess im being optimistic or overestimating nazarick power because i just feel like they could improve A LOT under true power an to top it off the crap load of items nazarick has that no one uses. Sorry if someone gets sour about the ignorant part cuz i myself can be ignorant at times but i am a logic type thinker and can see the unlimited ways you could use a few of those workers instead of having them for dinner.

Regardless tho i felt this entire chap could of been skipped i mean the pros vs cons i just dont see how useful it was to have ppl invade you, i understand the reasons they did it trust me. I have read what everyone has typed but in one way or another they could of did something different and/or much easier to accomplish the same tasks. However if its all a lie and some of the stronger workers are alive then i could see where testing traps on semi strong workers also testing how much $$ they consume. Testing the current strength of humans vs nazarick defenses. An in the end getting a few more loyal strong followers in the process is great.

But like i said before everything could of been accomplished in a different manner than risking his rep from hero who saved village to demon who lured workers to there death. I mean come on guys WHEN YOU ARE AN ORIGINAL PLAYER ADVENTURER THE LOYALTY COMES FREE OF CHARGE. At least for most ppl in that line of work.

    38. The Hero Momon and Ainz oal gown are two different personas. No one has drawn that connection. You're also overestimating human worth

      Delete
    39. "You're also overestimating human worth"
yeah that's what i also think in the new world human race, for other races are just like a pile of meat to be harvest. I don't see humans in the new world can just achieve a height like the 13 heroes do, just like parupatora he stated that the realm of heroes is beyond he's reach even in his prime he's like 80+ of age and another sample is fluder, he reached 200 years but he still lacking. So if you want to conquer the world it is much profitable to take in much powerful races than humans who can sure have exponential growth if trained correctly (and it can be said for other races too). You don't think Ainz or momonga will wait for another 200 years so the humans that he take in will have a worth for him.

      Delete
    40. No one has made that connection? Nfirea made the connection easily and he cant hide his face forever, he has already made the mistake several times of taking off his helmet in big crowds. An no i am not overestimating human worth i agree with sebastian point of view and after witnessing Brain and Climb get stronger from a single emotion then i belive u sir are underestimating them.

      Delete
    41. beyond ainz is reach yes, but even ainz has said that he will teach parupatora and ofc he will become much stronger. The humans in this world are lacking information, which is why the select few good one's can only get so strong. But even those weak humans were able to turn shalltear and if that were to happen in a weaker moment then that could mean bad news. Point is which i will say again... need more meat shields and less food for undead!!

Really appreciate it, not to take away from the translators whom I'd also like to give props to. I doubt I would've done something so professional; was just going to cut and paste the texts and images and call it a day. Once again thanx. Ainz Rocks!!!

It's about how a human's game world became a reality and he's slowly(actually rapidly) turning into the very character he created... The Overlord, an undead entity that couldn't give two shits about what the living thinks unless it serves to benefit him...

  19. Hmm although I can definitely understand Ainz actions, I must agree with all who said that he seemed a little bit too alien in this volume, it didn't seem like him at all.
I mean, while it is expected for him to show no mercy for outsiders and enemies of Nazarick, he did do so in several occasions before. Most notably, the lizards. Why would he so utterly crush the workers when he has shown so much mercy for the lizardmen? As a writer I feel torn with the path Maruyama has taken, since the workers character was built even better than the lizards, and they were pretty much scrapped.
The most surprising in all of this, though, is that I still like Ainz despite everything. It just annoys me that if the story keeps going like this, I feel like something horrible will happen as karmic backlash for Ainz's actions, possibly something to do with Albedo's team. Just a gut feeling, hope I'm wrong, though.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you think about it, Ainz never intended to help the village in the first place if not for the fact that he owed Touch me for saving the then weak him and during the lizard ark he had originally intended to add them to his skeleton army but changed his decision after wards degaussed of Cocytus' petition... And also he spared tsuare because of the earnest request of Sebas.. If not for these cases he would have killed or left them to die regardless of their circumstances... That just how he is... He doesn't have strong emotions or attachments to the living.. All he cats about is his comrades and the beings resident in his tomb... Let's not forget unlike other novels or mangas this novel's main character is not a human in the avatar of an undead.. Its a human that has turned into one and is slowly losing what's left of his humanity..

      Delete
    2. He attacked the lizardmen of his own accord, if they were wandering around Nazarick I doubt he would have shown them "mercy" (still not sure that slavery is better than death). Besides his mercy with the lizardmen allowed him to gain a large expendable fighting force, he didn't do it for an emotional reason, at least not as far as I could see. The only emotional mercy I can think of was Tsuare, iirc that was because of Sebas and that she strongly resembled one of his teammates (and something else to do with the girls sister..)? Recall that this story is called Overlord, it's not a story about justice and mercy, or the protagonist saving the world, Ainz isn't even an anti-hero he's pretty much a straight up villain, always has been it's just becoming more pronounced lately. As far as something to do with Albedo's team, I don't think she is on the same page as Ainz, it was bugging me before with that scene in her room awhile back and after this latest chapter I feel she has some sinister ulterior motives for wanting to lead the team herself and take the strongest NPC in the tomb. Perhaps she doesn't want the other SB's to return.

    5. I believe the implication was that Albedo doesn't give two hoots about the rest of the guild; she only cares about Momonga.

That'd be why she didn't care about the guild's banner, and it was previously mentioned that in her secret/sacred room, it was lying on the ground, discarded and trodden upon.

If you think about the power standards in that world, barring world class items, Albedo alone is stronger than practically every single known enemy in existence, as a level 100 character. So then there's the question: why does she want the npc so strong that it could beat even other level 100 characters in relative simplicity?

      The answer:
So that Albedo can kill them.

      Delete
    6. Don't forget ainz (as momon) already asked workers why they accept the job and the workers all say it because of money. But i too don't like Arche fate T_T.

In Tsuare case beside sebas request, tsuare is ninya elder sister.

    7. I do agree with you Medicine Melancholy-san. In this chapter only, that i feel something different in this novel. Like....out of character. Not that i mean the characters in the novel, but the novel characteristic itself is made quite different this time.

In the earlier volume of this novel, we know that this novel genre is dark-fantasy. But even it has the word 'dark', that darkness is rather soft, fun and quite refreshing. But only in this volume that something is made quite different : the characteristic of the novel. It become ruthless and merciless

For additional information, in volume 9, the characteristic will rather mercilessly 'dark' again (well, i only read from wikia and other posts in general, not the novel itself so this point of view may be not credible). But somehow i can accept that volume of 9th because i don't sense any 'out of characteristic' in the way Maruyama-sensei work. Only in this volume i feel that there's something that out of characteristic....and that makes me discontent honestly.

Once again, i do not see this 'out of characteristic' focused only at Momonga (well, momonga is both good and bad person, depending the situation) but rather the holistic characters of the novel itself.

  20. I love the series I really do but I'm reading less and less and skimming more. No point reading when the person that the perspective is from is just going to die anyway. Also Ainz turning into a massive piece of shit is really off putting. Violence for a reason is one thing but he has sadly become a psychopath with his flagrant slaughtering. If entoma goes around killing anything not just people it's ok but if someone almost gives it the death it deserves he throws a fit. His friends being japanese would be immensely disgusted by his actions. Villainy in a game is one thing but they would be aghast knowing the game and their creation are actually committing genocide. Touch Me would despise Ainz... then he'd just kill them too at this rate.

    1. I'm fairly sure Albedo is planning just that.

    2. You got no brain, didnt you? This light novel is not something so pure for you to read. If you want a good hero who saves the world, go get something else. Besides, Touch me maybe is a warm-hearted person. But if he has to kill innocent people for the sakes of the guild, I doubt he will hestitate.

      Delete
    3. Ah, Victor DoUrden-san, i definitely agree with you. It's not about wether we are too pure or what not, but what you said is really true. That is Momonga turned into a 'psychopath', well not fully, but yep that is.

It contradicts what Momonga hoped on the earlier volume. Well, maybe we can say that Momonga turn to be a more 'undead'ly being in the late chapter but i think that's not it.

Well, anyway, thanks because you can put into words something in my mind that i can't put it in words.

      Delete
    4. Well, it is not actually Momonga who is at fault, but the whole guild. Remember, it is not Momonga who designed these characters and the whole guild. While these creators might be aghast by the situation, it is their own malefic thoughts and imagination in its very heart.

Momonga also are doing these things in respect for the guild and his friends. As it was always said, Momonga love the guild and everything in it. Entoma is part of the guild and its human nature to be more emphatic to your own than strangers. For example, parents would likely blame and torture the victim girl than their rapist son. People would probably praise their soldiers as heroes and ignore all the atrocities they did. While these things are distasteful they are very very real.

Anybody in Momonga's situation would have done very much the same or more.

Senseless violence is also a constant truth in real life. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

    5. Im pretty sure that they would be undergoing the same type of transformation as Ainz and would not be nearly as digusted as you woukd think. All the people who are disgusted by Ainz's actions in this volume really dont understand that he is no longer human and is thinking and feeling like one less and less. Its something he cannot help. If you were turned into a snake, you might enjoy mouse more than you would think, and attack people who got too close as well. He is also pressured by Demiurge and others, and so acts the part moreso than he might would in order to help feel more in control. Essentially, he is acting reasonably for an undead necromancer overlord.

    6. I have a hard time seeing how people can't follow ainz's thinking. Ainz lured these people in with the intent to test a lethal defense system, right before they set out he confirmed they were doing this for money not out of some higher ideal. This means that this is now a matter of business and survival of the fittest. There are no ideals or personal ties holding ainz back, the weak were wiped out quickly, the strong used to test the defenses and how far they could go without using the paid defenses. In the end Ainz met the best group and got in a bit of practice to expand his personal experience with battle. This led to the group both impressing him and enraging him first with teamwork then with trying to use his friends. Friends which so far are the source of all of ainzs happiness...how would you guys react if the ONLY thing that makes you happy is harmed or threatened? Remember guys Ainz is "only human" with all the flaws that provides (strengths too but we notice those less) and he's a human who can't relate to the people of this world anymore, is desperate to do his best by his friends memories by way of their creations, and he can't break down, he is prevented from feeling "too much" he can't rage and cry to release these feelings,he can't even laugh in joy...if he can't feel strongly about something whats to keep him from doing things we refuse to out of guilt?or because its against the rules?he makes the rules as supreme being of nazarick...really the only things that shape ainz currently are his friends memories (which may be fading) the guardians (of which the good one is often away) and concern for Nazarick (which is an evil undead stronghold certain to be a threat to all around it)...none of these are telling him to spare the people of this world and 2 of them are saying wipe out the dangers.

  22. there is little doubt that his obsession with his guild mates would/will be the end of him if he doesn't cut back on the megalomaniac ways that he is following

from his descriptions of his guild mates they would be totally disgusted with his actions(and at least touch me is remarkably stronger than him as a world champion even if he would not currently have his equipment)
so as as unlikely as it sounds if they were actually in this world they would most likely end him themselves
there is also the question about some NPC loyalties

albedo, it's obvious that she wants to seek and destroy the rest of the guild members

shaltear, i can't really give a definite opinion

sebas would discard ainz in a heartbeat if TOUCH ME was against him

demiurge is pragamtic, most likely between a united front of guild members and ainz he would pick the one with most likely chances of survival

cocytus mind is too alien for me to evaluate, he has honor, mercy, and has a warrior mentality but he would strike defenseless and powerless beings if orders were given, even though he is evolving as a person/individual

rubedo is crazy but we have little information to form a definite opinion

pleiades would probably follow ainz out of duty

mare and aura would probably defend ainz

overall if what he wants the most comes true then it's also his doom
and yes you don't need to be a hero or anti hero to be likeable, even villains unless they're the crazy type won't seek meaningless slaughter for fun
he's honestly coming close to the deep end and gaining the mentality of normal undead
his real self is in death row

And in truth we know little of his friends besides most got drawn away from the game by real world issues, and that touch me is a protector of the weak, meaning he'd likely be upset with ainz but I think he'd try to talk to him before they fought...a lot would depend on when touch me encounters ainz at what point in ainz's development as evil overlord he encounters him and how long touch me has been in this world and changed.

  25. You have to remember that Ainz and Suzuki Satoru are very different. Mostly in that Ainz does not see himself as human, and holds no personal attachment to humans. With the other guild members being heteromorphic races as well, their mentality would likely be similarly affected. I think they way the other guild members would treat the local humans would depend mostly on the individual races.

  28. I'm just waiting for Ainz to ultimately die at this point. It seems to be a highly likely ending at this point, after the novel portrays him as nearly invincible to this world's inhabitants. Then, of course, he is revived, but as his original human form. Haha, just a really far-fetched theory, but it's possible I suppose. Albedo goes nuts and starts destroying stuff. Ainz sacrifices himself to kill her, is revived by Victim maybe, and is a human with the experience and intelligence of an Overlord. Albedo is revived as well, but fixed or with her original settings or something. Suzuki Satori is now the Human Overlord of this dimension. Again, a reeeaaalllllyyyy far-fetched theory, but an entertaining one. I, personally, would like that ending very well, as I can't really see any other positive ending... Though at this rate, why not shot for a surprisingly negative ending? Make it a divine comedy? I don't know... Thanks Sky Team! Wonderful work as always!

Being an actual undead overlord twists his mind and thought process. Its inherent in conquering the world that innocents will die. Look at Caesar, Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan, Napoleon, etc. He may or may not die, but the disgust for Ainz i see in some parts of this thread really are from the viewpoint of someone who is not keeping the context in mind.

  49. Looking at some of the comments, I am not sure what would you guys feel if you read about the massacre of the Kingdoms troops in Volume 9. As for volume 8, it will be a light hearted volume for those who were taken aback by Volume 7's dark storyline.

  52. First : Thanks again for the translation team.

    Second :
Just my rant... and sorry for my bad English.

For the people that try to remind everyone that "this novel name OVERLORD , what do you expected" . Yes its name OVERLORD , but not "The goddamn evil king Overlord conquer the world" . I means even the MC do good or bad things, he still "overlord" . Is it bad that people expect to see our beloved overlord do something good to people around him ? I don't think so..
For me.. I don't care the death of characters, but I want to complain about how scaredy cat in our beloved MC. No, I don't talk about he fear of dangerous potential outside Nazarick. Beware of your lack of information and move slow is good things. I talk about he fear his subordinate, he fear they will not trust him, he fear they will disappoint in him, he fear they will abandon him. And now.. he become some puppet to manipulate by his subordinate. Conquer the world, kill people around, even that the things he does not want to do. For the sake of the plan "Evil King Overlord" that he don't care to begin with. And in this volume again, the plan "alpha male god Ainz-sama" from Albedo. Sign..... If he had some courage to say " No! I don't want that", Or the courage to accept himself and tell the truth to his subordinate. You know what? this is why he feel so lonely, because he never speak from himself , he acting all the time, acting to everyone. I feel sad for him. With this story progress , I fear that this story will end at our MC dying alone in the dark corner, don't understand why everything feel empty even him already conquer the world, feel lonely that no one understand him even when he had many people around him. Ah... this is really tragic story.
Don't take it wrong way, I really like this novel. That why I try so hard to talk really long even my English is crappy. I just hope that one day our MC will have courage to become himself and do the things he want , live happily with his minions, if he try to take the world, just do it with his intension and happy with its, something like that. ^^

Best regards... from some Anon :)
(First time to type so long comments. Really sorry for my Eng)

    1. Yeah, he should realize that he is incompetent and really learn how to be a leader that make his own decision, not actor that controlled by his own subordinate.

      Delete
    2. Well.. I think "incompetent" is a little too much. In my opinion, he is good enough to be a good master or a good overlord, just that he accept to be himself.

That said, anyway, I think because he is a scaredy cat that got drag around like this its become funny story to read. If this is a story of some psychopath overlord that happily kill everyone for his enjoyment may be I don't read it for the beginning. :P

    3. He is rather incompetent leader imo, he didn't want to accept his lack of foreseen (this is his most biggest mistake, soon or later it will make huge problem for him and nazarick), didn't want to learn how to be a good leader (all he do are pose practice), and can't make his own decision, instead just following his subordinate wants. Even will throw his responsibility as ruler if his friend complaint about it (while it's good that he know he isn't a good leader, it just show him that he didn't want to be leader). Even though he is just normal worker before and didn't have any leadership, at the very least he can learn from a book, he has big library afterall, that's better than being actor. That if he really want to be a true ruler

    4. 1.He does accept his lack and tries to get better
2.He does learn how the becomea better leader all the time.
      3.Does makes his own decisions.

      Yeah butthurt.

    5. Yusuf, in my view, he is quite acceptable as the guild leader.

Lack of foresight (?). Stupid. You can't foresee everything. All leaders would soon fail to foresee one thing or another. Leaders would soon experience failure. If the mark of being a leader is to never fail in anything, then being a leader is impossible.

And just because he would quit if his friend complained doesn't make him a bad leader. Knowing when to stop is also part of leading.

Also, a complaint should be considered in decisions too. Surrounding yourself with 'yes' people is one of the most horrid ways of leading.

Also, not wanting to be a leader doesn't make that person a bad leader. Many people in history has lead successfully even if they don't like doing it. Leading is not about the desire to lead. If it is, then those leaders wannabe should have been good choices, no? Maybe those drunkards who wants to be the country's president would be your top choice of presidential?

Also, so what if he pose practice? Posing and pretending can help you learn especially at the start. People mostly start from pretend and then practice until the pretend becomes reality.

Nothing you really give is a reasonable reason to label Momonga as incompetent. It is more like you have a distorted vision of what a leader is like. Shake off your illusion boy.

And by the way, if you think that great leaders are good moral people, think again.

    6. Nono, you got it wrong
      1. He didn't want to accept that he is lack of foresight in front of his subordinate, instead just pretending know everything, even though he know that pretend knowing everything too much is bad, he still doing it.

      2. Okay, i get your point

      3. And that's what happen with him, he surrounded by "yes" people. I admit that i overlooked that he already did his own decision, but when demiurge or albedo giving their suggestion that actually bother him, he just follow it though he didn't like it. He didn't try to express the reason his dislike and then trying to search another suggestion.

For the rest, i can admit that i just an ignorant, but point 1 and 3 still my opinion, it was his mistake and if he didn't want to change it, it will bring a big trouble to him

    7. 1.Not the same as not accepting it.He doesn't want them to notice but he accepts it...ad tries to get better.
      2-
3.Becaseu he often thinks that it is the better idea.He knows that they are smarter than he is.It's of course not to simly good to accept all of it.But if they give him plans that work and are beneficial why not agree with them?

  53. Here is Arche history in the WN
    https://oniichanyamete.wordpress.com/2015/09/28/anallord-the-after-years/
I also have to say that i don't get why everyone got killed for real we took the time to know all this chapters at last he could have made Arche a vampire or just Shattelar pet, but well i suppose that the author just did not have any value to her later on so he decided it was better to just kill her. Even then is sad to see Etoma in her body :(

    1. Thanks for the link.

I'm like the Arche story in WN more than LN. I'm not talk about death or slave is better, I'm talk about value for novel. In WN it have more story, more feeling, interest reaction, possibility to connect to another event, fun to read. Atleast I think its more fun than cheap dead. Well... for now, I feel like LN is just cutting off because of a little sexual parts.

    2. As far as I remember the fate of Arche was decided by japanese readers in a poll or something like that. So the author is not entirely to blame. Also being just a puppet for carnal desire is not a good future even if she could be alive. Probably she would want to die everyday in that case, like a lot of abused people which prefer suicide than to be a doll for someone else, so people wanting her to be a slave in those conditions are being really sadistic to that poor secondary character.

      Delete
    3. Ainz takes her sisters to Nazarick and give her the choose to life with then in the sixth floor which is a happy ending and in the end she gets what she really wanted at first, anyways if the stuff about the poll is real i can get why it ended this way, i was just a little lost in the way the author changed Ainz in this Vol.

  54. Dunno about you guys but this is getting less and less interesting to me.

I know this is a dark novel. It's supposed to be about a villain and his gradual descent to utter villainy. That much has always been clear from the very first moment I set eyes on the title, and I'm not arguing/complaining about that.

However, I expect the descent into villainy to be about the growth of character for the protagonist, or some sort of story that's more intriguing. Even if he does become evil, I don't mind so long as there is sufficient reasons and justitications for it, and watching the process and his internal struggles and conflicts to become a richer character should be interesting. Just the story about him and his clashing with the external world should be good.

But the more I read on the more I get the impression that the novel is just trying to be dark for the sake of being dark. This wasn't an impression I get in the previous volumes. There is no such justifications for being evil, there is no acceptable reason to do so much unnecessary slaughtering and torturing of innocent people. I'm not saying this because I hate the fact that people are only being introduced to be treated unfairly and horribly, but that this happens with no other purpose than to demonstrate that the villain is oh so evil. There's not even a logical explanation for it, and instead of showing growth, the character Ainz is degrading to an incompetent, clueless and stupid leader who is pushed around by his subordinates. Even his thought process doesn't make sense, and the crappy justifications the author gave us on his decision making process can't manage to explain away the fact that Ainz is becoming so inexplicably stupid.

I'm not a masochist. I like seeing horror and bloodshed and suffering only if the story is interesting. I don't like horror and bloodshed and suffering for the sake of it.
To me it's quite simple: If the horror and bloodshed and suffering adds to the story, I can enjoy it. If the story becomes just another excuse to show the gory stuff, fuck no. And that was what happened in this volume: I dare say all the deaths and gores in this entire volume were completely unnecessary and added nothing to the story whatsoever. This is like watching B-type fanservice anime except in place of sexy fanservices you get gory fanservices. And while certain people might enjoy that, I'm here for the story only.

I'm gonna give the novel another volume to go and if this trend continues I'm out.

It has been an enjoyable experience, thank you guys from Skythewood blog for translating all of this, it has been really great work so far.

    1. Just want to comment in something like this..
Suddenly.. someone with better grammar than me comment.
So.. Yes.. I'm agree with you.
      For me Volume 1-4 are 10/10 V5=7/10 V6=9/10 and V7=5/10
This volume is just boring side character, boring action, boring gore, boring detail (detail is not bad but boring detail is bad), boring progress, boring story. I have feeling like see grade B horror movie.
But... I'm still have faith in author. I believe he just want to throw some gory to gory fans. Then in next volume it ll be better. At least until now, Overlord still the best LN I'm ever read. :)

  55. I really do not understand most of the problems that people say that they have with volume 7. For me is only seems that people cared too much about the faith of some secondary characters, especially Arche, because no one else gives a flying duck for the other characters. For me it seems to be an hypocrite rant for a female character. In fact I really like how the story is progressing giving us a real Overlord which only cares about the things he is attached to, it gives us a pretty interesting MC which is strange in the world of today LN's exploring what is to be dear to a person in a world without anyone else and his lost of human identity as his avatar state make changes in his human personality.

So thanks for the translation and I'm glad that Japan didn't care about our external opinions XD.

    2. The only problem I have with these volumes is precisely the fact that I never care about any of those characters. I know from the start that they'll all die and that the novel will hit the reset button at the end of it and nothing that I have seen will matter that much. At least with the lizardmen volume there was a shade of unknown.

  56. Hey Sky, will you translate the bonus novel that comes with volume 1 of the Overlord anime? (I got my information from So-bin's twitter by the way) Thank you for what you're doing!

  57. I feel like a narration from Ainz perspective during his meeting with the adventurers would have helped justify his actions better to the reader. The readers know of the circumstances of the raiders, but to Ainz, they are nothing but robbers fuelled by greed. From his perspective, they are slimy, shimmy robbers trying to take a ways the treasures and memories he and his comrades built together. These grave robbers deserved every miserable fate they received.

    1. Yeah i also think that is just the way it was presented to us was maybe not that well done side we know Ainz still have some of his human part in him and i was really thinking he would remember his guild members during this section but nothing happened except for no Shattelar rape(well she really never toke her virginity xD)

    2. There is also a problem with the narration due Ainz uses the workers as test subject of his defense network. Ainz is the one who invited the workers. Yes its Demiurge's plan. Ainz uses Fluder then Fluder uses some noble to hire some bunch of workers. Personally in this chapter Ainz is a hypocrite, yes the workers are greedy but seriously that is there job as an treasure hunter, mercenary and sell sword for hire. Ainz is just trying to justified his action in this volume but he is becoming more undead overlord in this volume than he realize. Personally this volume is not bad but the narration is out of place.

    3. The fact that being a thief is part of their job doesn't make it any better....They wanted money and knew the risk. And how is the narration out of place?

      Delete
    4. Its out place due Ainz is the one who truly hire them.

  60. The strong preys on the weak, that really fits this volume, but I personally don't think that this novel is evil, even humans are willing to sell their own family for money right?so I think the word "justice' or "good" is just another problem of POV where, ainz see the justice when the workers are killed for their greed, while the workers see justice in coin, but we see this volume a bit more sinister than the rest because it is displaying mostly from the workers POV,so we see ainz is evil.
