Youjo Senki (幼女戦記) gets anime.

The title means 'Loli Battle Chronicles', if you are wondering.
Fans will be pleased to learn that the anime will probably be faster than the translations when it comes out. This project remain hard as nails to translate.

If I were to use analogies to describe the difficulty level of translating;
KonoSuba (Gifting) is like a middle school tier,
Overlord is akin to high school,
Youjo Senki would be like doing a graduation thesis in college.

Of course, that is just my opinion and my personal experience. Do try translating it and let us know your take on the difficulty level.

Translation for Chapter 2 should be ready in late February.

  5. Yay anime! Maybe there's a chance that a military otaku will take notice of this one and maybe decide to help translate this.

    1. Ooooh that could be good or really bad. Let's hope the source material draws/animates itself!

  8. I'm surprised.

Tbh, I don't like the MC's personality/behavior, which made me drop the story by half-the first chapter.

Can I get a quick review on why I should continue an old tactless man in a loli (sigh, what a waste of loli)?

    I wanna read it, but.....

    1. That's the entire premise of the plot, it's because he have a cold personality of growing up in a peaceful era that God decide to reincarnate him on a war era to fix his personality.

    2. Why should you continue? It depends, most the amusement comes the irony of a domineering businessman getting reincarnated into a nonthreatening loli's body. And as was already mentioned, to 'fix his personality,' by finding faith, in the least, towards his fellow man.

His personality which by the way is considered warped even by his contemporaries' standards in this world on the cusp of war he reincarnated to. So the story revolves around the MC's domineering/clinical attitude in adapting to this world. And something that is more interesting, the world interacting with him/her.

    3. Also its a military light novel which has sort of a World War I and World War II vibe. I am thinking its leaning towards WWI, given the politics and tactics used thus far (spotter aircraft for artillery, and enemy squadrons harrying those aircraft). It's all kind of an interesting twist on what's normally out there. I stress 'normally.'

That just seems to make things worse imo.
And the God seems lame as fk. I'm used to the holy or sacred types, along with the occasional whimsical types and battle-hungry types, and sometimes comedic, but that God is just short tempered (in a Japanese cultural perspective where religion and gods are liberal and numerous, I understand, but...)

      @anon
I kinda understand now. And that was insightful, tbh.
Same as above though, the god is just....
As for your second comment, a WW type of military style is definitely rare.

    5. That god is really just there for the prologue. I mean you can gather from him that society made the MC and others like him. And they are all warped to some degree because of what society requires and impresses upon them. So what better way to point that out then by reincarnating them to a different world. In the story thus far the MC acts way too rationally/mechanically to the point he reaches 'crazy status' every so often (he's basically going about everything like when he was a businessman). I don't think it will philosophically dive deep into it, although it'd be interesting if it could be.

In the end I think he will follow god's goal of him finding faith, but it'd be towards his fellow man. Or he will really have to rely on god's power at the very end of the novel. Or he dies and tells god what he has learned and so there might be some vindication of the MC's actions. Thus far nonetheless he'll try his hardest to rely only on himself.

Also I do appreciate the additional irony that the MC's country is adding these angelic/holy motifs to her public image. When the people who really know her as... well... crazy.

    6. I should mention the MC reaches 'crazy status' but he gets a perverse pleasure from it that peaks out every so often. There was a moment in the LN where he's bloodied and close to death and he can't be any more happier, grinning ear from ear. Interpret as you will.

    7. @Sacha Riel

      Why would it be worse?

You should try reading web novels other than the ones Skythewood translates. Some stories outright condones torture and genocide yet have (disgustingly) hardcore fans.

The fact that this story at least plays the setting straight is remarkably level headed.

the contrast of looks and personality is exciting no ? also he isn't tactless at all. he valued the stability of his environment though he isn't feeling anything wrong pressing anyone below him down as much as his pride allow him. it is quite the irony isn't it ?

    1. You may have been mistaken on something. When I said tactless, I meant the lack being thoughtful and having delicacy, or just plain decency.

Or was there another form of tactless that I don't know?

      Delete
    2. Though, more than the interest in the irony (which is be a good point, tbh), I feel more disdain from that very contrast, as I end up seeing him as a terrible hypocrite.

Though, one of the other comments said something about it being WW-ish, if it's on the perspective of war, there is definitely no problem for me to take interest in such a character, as there is no dissonance between the battlefield and a cold commander.

But his personality and his previous life job combination just makes him hateable, a complete antagonist, if you will.

      Delete
    3. The MC is a true anti-hero in all sense of the word. Her country treats her has an angelic idol, but the people and the company she eventually commands knows how twisted and Machiavellian she is. Much to their chagrin she is really good at being a frontline commander.

Maybe a hypocrite, but as you read on he is very bitter being reincarnated into a loli (karma from his past life or god has a sense of humor). His masculine voice replaced by a small and yet high pitch squeak; which is further compounded by a lisp.

There is a low of war stuff that commanders on the front line have to face. It might interest you in that respect. The story does go towards a lot of side characters, to get that 'fly on the wall' perspective on the MC.

      Delete
    4. Also and this might have been pointed out but the MC is a borderline sociopath in his former world, or at the very least unable to feel or express empathy. As long as people do their jobs efficiently and competently he is easy to be with but he hates sloppiness and poor work ethic. Unfortunately coupled with his complete lack of empathy this make him a total @$$hole. The God when it reincarnated him wanted him to fix this about himself but unfortunately only put him in an environment where his particular personality would be rewarded the more extreme he let himself be in the analytical lack of empathy toward people. The only true punishment is the cute Loli body high pitched voice and the lisp. I like it because I admire main characters who are flawed yet competent. This MC reminds me of a smarter Ains owl gown. Like if Ains and Demiurge were mixed together and their magic turned to tactical and analytical skill in a little girls body this is what you would get

    4. Hmm, it literally is 幼女戦記. And I found a website for you. Search xs.dmzj on google and find it there yourself. Beware though, I don't think that site is safe. SFACG doesn't have it so I don't know any alternative

  17. When you say it's college graduation thesis level, do you mean the level it's written in, in Japanese, or the difficulty to make it a translation that doesn't shame the original?

I'm okay at Japanese, and got the 4 first volumes in my bookshelf, but if I start and find it way too hard, I'd probably just hate myself. So instead I'm asking this.

Thank you VERY much in advance!

  22. why everyone seems aphatic to Studio Deen.

Granted they kinda hit or miss. but Kono Suba tv Anime have quite good quality imo. Log Horizon 2nd season also not bad, though The character were diffrent from s1

    1. Its because they have a horrible track record in animation to the point it's basically a meme in japan and outside the country. Kunosuba is doing well yes, but due to the writing and voice acting rather than the quality of the animation. Look at the background characters during any scene and compare it to other shows this season.

Dont get me wrong, it might turn out well. But Deen quality is fairly low/rushed

      Delete
    2. On the bright side about studio Deen, they animate a lot of niche stuff, that we'd normally not see in anime form.

That being said at the same time, some of the niche stuff is toilet paper to them, wipe and done.

      Delete
    3. I think people just to focused on Deen. Anime production have also considered budget. Not all Production house have backup like Sunrise have with Bandai.

And Anime based on relatively unknown Light Novel were rather tight budget, with animation were introduced as means of promotion. Hoping SSS quality from not so popular work is futile.

      Delete
    4. @the d Ont, doesn't mean we have to be happy about it. They have a flexible production but they cut corners a lot of times, remember Pupa! Not saying 'Youjo Senki' anime will be bad, its just that they had a poor track record for the last 8 years.

Also anime is 95% a promo for the source material.

      Delete
    5. Deen also butchered Kono Suba generic character design, I'm not expecting a studio to make the same quality as LN illustration but Deen just flop on it real bad. On this, you don't really need much budget on animation when you're making an anime out the character and world development. I just hope it's madhouse again.

      Delete
    6. Well, Overlord by madhouse wasnt hi-quality either and even if, we shouldnt expect high-budget sakuga animation like Hunter X Hunter. That being said, while we all are pretty much on the same page considering Deen, promotion and popularity can also be bad for us leechers. If this LN get licensed, well R.I.P. fan translations.

I think the LN will be much better but I understand its hard to TL. Thank you.

  27. Yay for the anime~

But hey, the LN is THAT difficult? No wonder you are careful with the translation... yet, I'd like to think that it is worth it! After all, if the author chose to write his story with such an elevated language, then the target is definitly adult, meaning it gotta be good. (I expect)
