Konosuba picked up by Yen Press

https://twitter.com/yenpress/status/733707705865605120

Great news for everyone who wants a quality translation! Yen Press has picked up this project.
The fanfic site started because I was issued a DMCA without anything being licensed, which irked me.
Now that they have licensed it, it is only right to stop since they are releasing an official version. Not right to deny the author her share of the profits.
Vanir fanfic will be uploaded starting next week, and fanfic 9 will be the last volume to be worked on.

  1. Oh so you still plan to finish the V9. Calling it a Fanfic at this point would be dangerous i think. (it might be taken as plagiarism, which is not so good news.) Anyways, good choice to to stop.

    1. Oh I'm certain they already know about the site. They're just happy that the hype is still being maintained.

    2. Actually Sky or Sine can still host & translate so long as YenPress hasn't released the official 1 yet.
They can't sue for plagiarism so long as there is no official ver to compare it to. This can also apply to future releases as well, even if Sky's team releases V9 in the future, so long as there is no official version they can't sue for plagiarism so long as it is "FANFIC". But law is a messy business so this is just layman knowledge

  2. I'm... not sure how I feel about this... I'm happy but still. Official translation are usually slow. Welp whatever, if it helps the author then hell I'm supporting it.

    1. sky says that volume 9 will still be fanfic-ed.

Going by the rate I see with other series, like DanMachi, it should take them 3-4 years to reach to that point. Which is about the same time it took the author to reach the same point.

    2. Wow they're as fast as the guy who had to come up with the story, write script, rewrite after review and wait for illustrations ? That's great, they're soooo fast ! >_>

    1. They sometimes do strange things, like translating proper katakanized English (not wasei eigo) as a different thing, but they have the means, prices not very expensive and passable quality.

  7. You know if the spin-offs are included?
Crimson magic fanfic spin-off should already be in its last volume, just checking the point in time inside the story...

  15. I really hope the fanfic doesn't stop. People who buy the LN will always buy it, and people who don't, won't in my opinion... even if you stop. :x so I hope you can continue translating.

On a side note... I wonder how the people who donated a lot in order to keep translations and the website going for years is feeling... lol.

I was sad when Konosuba was taken down here, then I saw a fanfic posted that seemed well written. However I never read more than a page or two cause I wasn't interested in fanfics.

So are you implying...That your Konosuba fanfic, might have been something other than it's name suggested?... And I have been missing out this entire time?

I would really like a reply cause if so, I've got a lot of chapters to DL

You don't know sh!t about how importing books works in my country.
At best, you;ll be charged the same amount as the book at worst you pay thrice the amount and if it has a questionable cover, its off to jail plus mass media shame.

      Delete
    5. Not my fault that you apparently live in a corrupt, 3rd world sh!thole.

Maybe you should stop wasting time whining about importing translated books, work hard to earn money, then migrate out of said sh!thole ASAP.

    6. @Anonymous living in that country with a shitty tax are you perhaps living in Philippines?

    7. To the asshole moaning. You really have no idea. The price of one book at $5 is 2 days food with the weak currency now. Proper food - steak, not ramen. 100% tax and VAT on top of that means a book is a massive luxury. I but the digital editions. Some book stores refuse to sell digital editions due to my location. I have to vpn in just to buy a book.
Saying migrate out is also really crass. As stated before: you have no idea what you are talking about. Until you have tried to migrate on your own dime don't speak as if it is so easy.

  23. well what they did was really a nice thing since kodokowa dmca sky. and the whole fanfic is already under the table. so it was either a matter of time if sky is dmca again or someone picked it up. seriously i dont get the complaining, im already numb from yen press licensing.

your either complaining because of three reason. 1. you're a cheap bastard. 2. your an impatient person. 3. you dont like how yen press localalized their books. 4. you just like to complain

    1. Their intentions to bring Jap LN to the west is something admirable however the problem is the titles they tend to pick up.
I swear, I think they are practically combing the net to look for fan-translated light novels and when it reaches a certain point they pick it up.

      Delete
    2. Oh, i understand and am also frustrated about this stopping fan translated work. But is the quality of their releases that bad? I want to support the author, but not by buying a sub-par product.

      Delete
    3. The quality varies greatly. Their S&W translations are pretty good. Their NGNL translations, hovever.... yea... https://frogkun.com/2015/05/03/stay-away-from-the-no-game-no-life-english-novel/ ... so its kinda random, depending on the specific people working on the novel. ranges from good to fucking horrible

  36. Another project dead. RIP.
And "everyone who wants a quality translation" was a very funny remark. Was it a sarcasm? Coz I can't see any "quality" it YenPress' translations.
Well, English is foreign language for me, but if style, vocabulary and tone of Skythewood's translations keep an originality and unique atmosphere of each ranobe then YenPress' translations look like conveyored and americanized in worst meaning: I have no feeling these are even ranobe but only nasty feeling like I read a fkn fanfic wrote by an Americain middleschoolar with talent about average.
I just hope one day YenPress owners will be caught on taxes evasion, jailed and dead in prison.

    1. I wish you read more English and good translated literature to understand that language of every one of original works is unique. And YP have no idea what they translating, what difference between authors is there. They just think about any text like it is something like school homework aka "You need translate this for next lesson. Dismiss.".
Even if the result in some cases will be not that bad from POV of standard English the result still will be like a piece of shit if we talk about literature quality.
YP not spend money for promotion nor they do any full-heart work from they side to create a masterpiece.
They just try use famous of other people for making easy money. That's all.

      Delete
    2. Why do we love something who are not even love their own works. Have you read mahouka kouko vol 1 that YP released last month.? That's shit. It's not even close to the fan translation (who're close to original LN). They also cut suffixes like senpai to just their names without honorific (like watanabe-senpai >> watanabe). And they change onii-sama to just TATSUYA. It's not mahouka anymore without onii-sama.
YP literaly translating JP >> ENGLISH without even understanding the story inside. They're just a tranlating robot who translate words to words and just want to get money from series that have huge fandoms all around the world with their shitty translation.

      Delete
    6. Ah, the retarded leechers who can only whine about things being "taken" from them, even though the people they hate so much are the ones who actually paid money to legally acquire licenses to conduct their business as they wish.

How about you haters quit whining like retards, and do something productive with your lives instead? Don't like the way YP conduct their business, and so absolutely convinced that your way is flawless? Then start your own, hire your own translators, acquire your own licenses, pay for your own books to be printed or publish them online.

... Or just keep impotently complaining like the leechers that you are. Suit yourself.

      Delete
    7. It's true that many people complain without having acquire even a single volume from YP. However that's not always the case. After I started learning Japanese I was shocked but how bad and misleading were some of YP translations (of course not all of them). As a costumer I wish I had the opportunity to sue YP and ask for a full refund for "deliberately" altering a piece of literature by hiring amateur translators/staff in order to maximize their profit. As Kadokawa is a serious company I hope that they'll take drastic measures and re-evaluate the whole translation and editorial staff. Licensing" itself should be consider something good as it gives us the chance to read a genre that was unknown to us until 10 years ago, however don't compare leechers with costumers. As a costumer I DEMAND quality products that justify the money I paid! And believe me, just from a single book I could give you many examples of "made up translation" by comparing the official and YP release.

  50. I don't think you should say "quality" translation Sky, it feels like you're putting yourself down. I'm not an English major but the chapters you translate are flow naturally and are conveyed quite well. Anyways I'm looking forward to a potential new series you pick up. Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sky, sky, sky. We know you wanted it to sound positive. But. Many YP translations are worse than fanlations. NGNL as a prime examlpe. Granted, they do have some well-done ones, such as S&W, but its still not really better than what you & your team have been putting up. So, it is basicly a possibility for a ok-level translations. Very many thanks for what you did so far with this novel, as well for not dropping it instantly and continuing (that's not how you write that word is it?) with vol9. Much appreciated. BTW 4 comments above this was an interessting sugestion. Do give it some toughts. Love ya~

  64. Has there been a case when a translation went to darknet when clearnet is no longer safe because of DMCA?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Meh. I actually do buy the Yen Press editions... and the quality isn't exactly great. Even on a casual read, I find language errors in the English. Apart from that, they're painfully slow in releasing volumes. They should just consider fan translations as free advertising and stop bothering the translators. Those who want the hard copy, WILL buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. What will they translate next? Hopefully its Transfer Diary...

    ReplyDelete
  67. They own the trade mark, they want to sell THEIR product, and not let us read from sky :'( I prefer fan translations better than theirs because the people who translate for free use non-sophisticated words and get straight to the point while still accurately describing the scene. Other translations may take half a chapter just to describe a scene and then the 'meat' (pun of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, which was available on another site and got canceled due to a company picking it up)

    ReplyDelete
  76. It's gonna take another five years for them to catch up.
I can probably learn Japanese by then.
It's the fan translations that make the author and the novel popular. Without them they would've remained as insignificant existences. I mean seriously, Japanese is not a language that people in other countries would've cared about if not for anime and manga which are also fan translated before release of English dubs.
I really hope you guys do more volumes coz yenpress sucks..
