Overlord Volume 8 Afterword

I’ve been very busy recently. As a result my tummy and chin have become plump. This is the author who evolving into Mr. Pig, Maruyama Kugane. To those who have bought this book or have it on hand, thank you very much!

For the most part, I’ve been busy because of the animation project, work and other things.

Right now the animation is going smoothly, with such heart warming exchanges as “How is Ainz going to smile?” “Do it somehow!” “Please do something, Mr. Director!”

In addition to the anime, the Overlord manga (drawn by Miyama Fugin-san) has also begun serialization in Comp Ace. By the time everyone has this book in their hands, chapter 2 should have come out. His work makes you feel that “Ainz is a really cool character!” Please take a look, by all means!

Now then, there’s a reversible cover with an illustration on the inside included with the limited first edition of this book

This piece of art is easily the equivalent of any other light novel’s colored illustrations, the produce of so-bin-sama’s reckless desire to draw something (the female characters’ bath scene), and it moved Maruyama deeply..

Although I have the feeling that this is a one-off for this volume, I hope that readers who like this sort of thing will send their wishes to me on postcards.

Then, after this will be the credits.

Many thanks to So-bin-san, who solved many problems even as the work grew ever greater.

Thanks to the designers at Chord Design Studio, the proofreader Ohaku-sama, the editor F-ta san, as well as to everyone who helped me make Overlord. In addition, many thanks to honey, who spotted a major mistake.

And finally, thank you to all the readers out there. I hope to speak to you again in the future.

December 2014

  1. First, I'd like to show my gratitude to you guys, skythewood team, for giving me my weekly dose of Overlord. As always, wish you all the best. I'll always cherish the time we're spending together on this series, I'll miss you guys. And to any Yen Press's employers lurking around here, there's a special place in hell reserved for you guys. By the time the official English version caught up with Overlord vol. 9, most of us would have forgotten this great piece of work. What a shame.

    2. Yeah right!!?
I'm happy for the author and all, but....
Yen Press is putting the cart before the horse.
why bother licensing so many while not able to hold up the rhythm

      3~4 years?

Better get that early onset dementia checked, kiddo.

Oh? I've seen claims that YP often licence projects then sit on them for years without actually releasing anything (at worse, Mahouka is 13 months between licencing and release of volume 1, that is not "years" plural), and that they take a year between volumes (when I can easily find that it's usually only ~4 months between volumes).

If you can provide even a single example to back up those kinds of claims, you'd be the first person I've seen shit-talking about YP to actually do so, instead of just talking out their ass.

... But until then, the facts supports the idea that Overlord will catch up to volume 9, within 3~4 years.

    6. Sure they will. If Overlord was the ONLY series they had licensed

    7. "Sure they will. If Overlord was the ONLY series they had licensed"

Index was hardly the "ONLY" series YP has licenced either, yet they're releasing 5 translated volumes within a year (November 2014 - November 2015):

See? It's really not that hard to find supporting evidence, if a claim is actually based on facts.

  5. A good volume, on par with 4'th. Thanks!

  6. I'd love for Enri to become a real asset to Nazarick as a commander. She could read some of those countless skill raising tomes from the library and become op in no time, so she could lead human/demihuman armies in the name of Ainz. That would be awesome

    2. to ZHOU: what?

Because she commands some goblins and ogres doesn't mean she really has the abilities to do so properly. Tha one who really commands is the goblin leader or Brita (Enri says what to do but the others decide how to do it).

I don't think those skill books work that way. They need to have the needed lvl, race and class to use/learn them.

  13. Thank you very much for all your hard work translating Overlord!
I think Yen Press is trying to ruin the LN market, given their translation quality and speed you can hardly call them allies.

  14. Thank you very much author and translators.. you may not see my messages right now. but truly i am very grateful to you guys.. its sad that the translations and reading of this wonderful light novel would be gone, but still ill never forget all the chapters and translation you brought to us. ^_^ again i sincerely Thank you from the bottom of my heart, :))

  15. Yen Press is really absurd. Because Overlord is becoming so nice, they thought, about lisensing it. But the work and quality is rather bad. The want only money nothing more.

  26. Honestly...I thought this was a translation of the web novel for the series or something. If that IS the case...then, well...doesn't Yen Press actually have ZERO say in it? Wouldn't that lie solely on the author themselves?

Web novels and light novels are actually considered different things, after all...which is why when a WN is adapted into a LN, they have to change some details so that it's sufficiently different story-wise...even if/though the author stays the same.

This is why Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken's LN differentiates from the WN story-wise in volume 5 or so in some ways at least (though I'm sure other aspects of the story change before then, as well).

    1. "Honestly...I thought this was a translation of the web novel for the series or something."

WN: Arche lives, getting turned into a vampire bride.
LN: Arche dies, getting chopped into piece after death.

Worked out whether this is the translation of the WN or LN yet?

  27. This story is amazing, so I hope you do continue it. It would be a shame for you to stop doing so...and then have YP finally release the volumes that you haven't gotten to in 3-4 years or however long it actually takes them to get that far.

It's honestly an absurd amount of time to wait, imo. They shouldn't be able to do C&D's or whatever they did for crap like that imo, but what can you do. -_-

  28. First of all thanks for translating this work, its interesting. I was drifting around reading xianxia all over the interweb when I found this; kind of sad to see the ride coming to an end. Thank you skythewood and co. For translating as much as you can and I hope you guys catch up before they push copyright on you guys. Thanks a lot again. :)

  29. I hope that someone will continiue to translate this series. Cause dont want to wait for more than 3 years to actually read something new. But i will buy the books for the sake of the author. But i still want to read the new stuff.^^

    ReplyDelete
  30. The best solution is to not buy LN until Yen Press and co stop thinking fans are idiots that will buy their products no matter the low translation quality and speed.
Manga and LN are about the only markets where fan translation are actually way better than official work done by "professionals".
