To add subtitles you need either a muxer (MKVToolnix is a good one) or give the same name to the video file and the subtitles file, placing eother both files on the same folder or the subtitles file in a "subtitles" sub-folder or in the "subtitles" folder of the software you use to open the video file.
If you decide to mux it, simply open the muxer, drop the video file and the subtitles file into the GUI and start it. The resulting video file has now subtitles.
